LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

Tarifa's two wind systems define the experience. The Levante (easterly) is the stronger, more frequent wind - powerful but gusty, especially at Los Lances where it blows offshore. The Poniente (westerly) is cleaner and cooler, blowing onshore. Poniente for the consistent wind, Levante for big air.

For big air, the locals' months are February, March and October, when the Levante delivers the most consistent strong days. April and May are the sweet spot: reliable wind, warming up, and a fraction of the summer crowds. July and August bring peak tourism, hour-long drives to the beach, and ironically the lightest wind of the year.

Los Lances

Ocean

The main kite beach. Offshore Levante flattens the water but is gusty — rescue card essential. Poniente blows onshore with cleaner, more consistent pressure. In spring, rain and high tides can flood the beach into a huge flat water lagoon.

Best for: All levels (Poniente). Intermediate+ in Levante. Freeride, freestyle, foiling.

Valdevaqueros

Ocean

Sand dunes create a thermal funnel that often delivers a few extra knots over Los Lances. When the wind is marginal elsewhere, come here first. Around 2km offshore, the Bajeta reef receives consistent waves on certain tides — not a solo mission, but worth knowing about.

Best for: All levels. Stronger thermal on light days. Freeride, freestyle.

Balneario

Ocean

Compact spot at the mouth of the strait where the Levante arrives with little land interference. Incoming swell and offshore wind create unique jump conditions you won't find anywhere else. Space for 10–15 riders who know exactly what they're doing.

Best for: Advanced/expert only. Big air. Offshore Levante.
