Surfing, Kitesurfing & Bodyboarding a Wave onto Dry Rock

2021 | Dirty Habits

A crew of surfers, bodyboarders, and a kiteboarder attempt to surf a wild wave that detonates onto a dry rock, but if you survive the deadly drop, you might get the barrel of your life.

The beauty of South Africa lies in its open space, dirt farm roads, and untouched gems. With dedication, long drives, days of studying weather charts, and, most importantly, the local knowledge of bodyboarders who’ve been silently charging this wave for years, the crew found this secret spot.

This wave had been on kiteboarder Graham Howes’ radar for years. Using a kite, he could access waves he’d never be able to paddle into. Koa Smith, visiting from Hawaii, also had his eye on the wave. Initially, the forecast seemed unsurfable, so they arranged for Ross Dillon and James Taylor to tow surf with Jet Skis. However, once they arrived, Benji Brand and Koa decided to try paddling in, risking the exposed reef’s deadly consequences.

At the secret spot, the crew was greeted by a group of bodyboarders who kept a close eye on the conditions. There were more cameras and photographers than riders, most swapping boards for water housings to capture shots from deep, sharky waters. The boys shared plenty of waves, some looking like they had a death wish.

Graham waited all day for the wind to shift, but it never did. With offshore winds at 8-10 knots, he couldn’t stay upwind and had to rely on a ski to return to shore. He tried to ride the wave but was pulled through the lip and couldn’t catch the face due to the wind direction. “I’ll keep an eye on the weather charts and plan for a proper go next time.” – Graham Howes
